Becoming Politically Savvy

Your Challenge: Do you have trouble discerning the political forces in your organization? Can you engage them favorably to increase your likelihood of successful progress? How can you avoid the pitfalls of adverse interests?

Proven Strategy: Learn what the forces are and who’s generating them so you can be more adroit. Politics are a reality in any organization or anytime two people get together, whether you like it or not. Learn how to work with that reality rather than deny it with Nova’s practices.

Develop the practice of drawing Influence Charts to guide activities.
Create charts of key influencers and their interests for projects under consideration to help you visualize who the real decision-makers and influencers are, especially the informal systems for getting things done. The chart should include not only the vertical links to upper-management decision-makers but also horizontal and diagonal links to peer groups, support organizations, and staff, as well as internal or external stakeholders.
